Introduction
Globalization is among the most influential phenomena of the modern era, affecting nearly every aspect of human life. Beyond its economic implications, globalization extends to political, cultural, social, environmental, scientific, religious, and sports domains. Sports, as an integral part of human civilization, have also been deeply impacted. The primary aim of this study was to design a comprehensive model for the globalization of ancient sports, focusing on their development, preservation, and international expansion. Ancient sports such as Zorkhaneh represent historical and cultural heritage; however, they face challenges related to modernization and commercialization in today’s globalized world. Understanding the mechanisms through which globalization affects these sports is essential for developing strategies to ensure their sustainability and integration into the global sports ecosystem.
Methods
This applied research employed a qualitative methodology based on grounded theory to develop a globalization model for ancient sports. The study sample consisted of 38 experts, including professors of sports management and members of Zorkhaneh sports committees. Participants were selected through purposive and snowball sampling to ensure in-depth knowledge and experience. Over 15 hours of semi-structured, in-depth interviews were conducted until theoretical saturation was achieved. The data were transcribed and analyzed using NVivo 10 software through systematic coding and categorization. In total, 53 concepts and six main indicators influencing the globalization of ancient sports were identified. To validate the findings, a questionnaire was designed and completed in four rounds, with formal and content validity confirmed by experts. The reliability of the final questionnaire was calculated using Cronbach’s alpha, which yielded a coefficient of 0.88.
Results
Analysis revealed six main indicators essential for the globalization of ancient sports:
Media and Press: Increasing international visibility through traditional and digital media channels.
Sports Tourism: Creating cultural exchange opportunities and economic investment via sporting events.
Economic Factors: Funding, sponsorship, and financial sustainability.
Sociological Factors: Cultural identity, public interest, and social acceptance.
Technical Factors and Facilities: Modernizing training methods and standardizing equipment.
Educational Factors: Incorporating ancient sports into academic curricula and educational programs.
These indicators jointly contribute to the expansion and sustainability of ancient sports such as Zorkhaneh in the global sports arena.
Conclusion
This study highlights the growing importance of globalization in shaping the future of ancient sports. While globalization presents certain challenges, it offers significant opportunities for the preservation, promotion, and international expansion of traditional sports. By adopting strategic policies and leveraging modern technologies, sports managers and policymakers can facilitate the integration of ancient sports into the global sports ecosystem. Continuous research and development of tailored models addressing the complexities of globalization, while respecting cultural heritage, are crucial. Through education, media engagement, and international cooperation, ancient sports can be revitalized and adapted to contemporary global trends.
